The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (H.R. 6, Sec. 1335) allows for a 30% tax credit up to $2,000 towards the purchase price and installation cost of a residential solar energy system. Residents may take an additional 30%, up to $2,000 towards a solar water heating system. Additional tax credits of 30%, up to $500, may apply for fuel cells.
Xcel Energy will pay up to $4.50 per watt (DC) for Xcel Energy customers who install solar power systems which are connected to the grid. The system size may range from .5 Kw to 10 kW.
Xcel Energy also participates in net metering where your excess energy production will be credited towards the following month's bill. If you have net excess generation at the end of the year, the customer will be paid for the excess. Payment is determined by multiplying net kilowatt-hours by the then-current energy price.
